The most important part: Aperturas has no advertising, no analytics and no trackers, and it doesn’t sell or share your data. We don’t use our own servers: your progress stays on your iPhone or iPad and in your own iCloud account, and we can’t see it.
Aperturas is an app by Carlos Carmona (Tzinitzcan). For any questions about this policy, write to us from the Support page.
If you write to us through the contact form, we use your name, your email and your message only to reply to you; we don’t share them or use them for anything else.
On your device and in your iCloud:
• Your progress: the openings in your repertoire, learned lines, review cards, streak and activity days, Lightning mode records, solved mate puzzles, learned punishments, achievements and your study route.
• Your games: the ones you play in the app and online, and the ones you download from Lichess or Chess.com with the username you entered.
Only on your device:
• Your settings (board, appearance, sound, reminders, your profile piece) and the game you left unfinished.
If you’re signed in to iCloud, your progress and your games are also stored in your iCloud account, in the app’s private space, so they’re the same on all your devices. That copy is kept by Apple with your account; we have no access to it. You can turn this off in Profile › Settings › iCloud. To delete everything, use Profile › Settings › Delete all my progress: it is also deleted on your other devices and in iCloud.
If you connect your account, you only enter your username: we don’t ask for your password and we don’t sign in. The app downloads your public games directly from Lichess or Chess.com, as your browser would, and compares them with your repertoire on your own device. Those sites receive the request (like any visit to their website) and are governed by their own privacy policies. You can disconnect the account whenever you want from Your games.
Game Center is an Apple service and it’s optional: without it you can use everything except playing online. If you sign in, the app receives from Game Center your nickname, your Game Center photo and a player identifier, and it sends Apple your progress on achievements and your scores on leaderboards. Leaderboards are public in Game Center: other players see your nickname, your scores and your rank.
If you give permission to see your Game Center friends, the app only uses the list to choose whom to invite to a rematch; it doesn’t store it.
We don’t receive your email or any other data from your Apple account. Game Center is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
Online games, live or turn-based, go through Game Center. Only what’s needed to play is sent to your opponent: the moves, the time control, your profile piece, your estimated Elo in the app and whether you have Aperturas Pro (to show your gold ring). Your opponent sees your Game Center nickname. There is no chat and there are no messages. Aperturas doesn’t store online games anywhere other than Game Center, your device and your iCloud.
Aperturas Pro is a one-time in-app purchase. It is processed by Apple with your App Store account: we don’t receive your payment details. The app only asks the App Store whether the purchase is active (also if you get it through Family Sharing or when restoring purchases).
The review, play and Your Week reminders are local notifications: they are scheduled by your own device and don’t go through any server. They are off until you turn them on in Profile › Settings › Reminders.
Aperturas is for all ages and doesn’t collect data from anyone, children included.
If this policy changes, we will post the new version on this page with its date.
